<p>It has been a busy year for the Academic Analytics Research Center. We’ve conducted webinar presentations and published the results of a handful of research projects, and we’ve also provided public access to the data resources underlying a position paper on the rhythms of scholarly publication. As we head into the fall season, we’re looking back at what we’ve learned as we examined the national research environment so far this year.</p>
<h3><em>Are we too focused on journal articles?</em></h3>
<p>First and foremost, each academic discipline has its own identity and dynamic. How scholars conduct research and report their results changes from one discipline to another. Many engineering disciplines favor publication of conference proceedings, while the physical, biological, and health sciences rely almost exclusively on the journal article. The social sciences and humanities, on the other hand, employ a mix of journal articles, book chapters, and books for the dissemination of research. <h3><em>Career stage is related to publishing practices</em></h3>
<p>Different segments of a discipline’s population make their own distinctive contributions to the research literature. We found that early career researchers are publishing more articles than previous generations and appear to be setting an example for their more senior colleagues, encouraging them to do the same. At the same time, we have also found that senior researchers consistently publish more books and book chapters than their junior colleagues. Drawing on their years of experience, senior scholars shift their research focus to the review and synthesis of ideas and contribute to their respective disciplines through the publication of books and book chapters, as seen in the figure below (figure source: <a href="https://doi.org/10.31235/osf.io/ves6g">10.31235/osf.io/ves6g</a>).</p>

<h3><em>The “quantification” of the social and behavioral sciences influences publishing patterns</em></h3>
<p>Disciplines are evolving in response to changes in technology, knowledge creation and dissemination, and changes in the funding environment. With the advent of digital technology and the increasing importance of research through the quantitative exploration of massive databases, there has been a clear increase in journal article publication in the social science disciplines. At the same time, we also found that the influence of performance-based research assessment systems on faculty publishing and research decisions have contributed to a decline in the number of book publications, as seen in the figure below (figure source: <a href="http://doi.org/10.13140/RG.2.2.15989.29922">10.13140/RG.2.2.15989.29922</a>).</p>

<h3><em>Disciplines have publishing rhythms – analytical timeframe matters</em></h3>
<p>The tempo of research and publication varies from discipline to discipline. Some are fast; some are slow. Some require only months to see the impact of publication; others may require years. Thus, one’s choice of a comparative timeframe can have profound effects on cross disciplinary comparisons. This is particularly telling in the humanities. For example, we calculate that 81% of historians have published at least one book in the most recent 10-year period. However, looking at the most recent three years, only 42% of history faculty have authored a book. Clearly, a complete picture of disciplinary research activity requires a longer timeframe (publication rate data over different timeframes is available for all disciplines at: <a href="http://doi.org/10.17605/OSF.IO/MYAUT">10.17605/OSF.IO/MYAUT</a>).</p>
<p>In all, we have gained an appreciation of national research activity as a kaleidoscope of research and publishing practices, each discipline requiring that it be understood and assessed on its own terms. A multiplicity of approaches to the creation of knowledge and dissemination of research results provides the greatest opportunities to gather rich observations about the complex world we live in.</p>

Upcoming Webinar: Senior Scholar Publishing Activity

<p>AARC researchers are delighted to see our recent article “Who’s writing open access (OA) articles? Characteristics of OA authors at Ph.D.-granting institutions in the United States” discussed by the scholarly community, and we hope our findings contribute to the greater open access project and its goal to democratize the research literature. <a href="https://www.mitpressjournals.org/doi/full/10.1162/qss_a_00091">Here’s a link to the article</a>. Recently, for instance, journalist Benjamin Plackett published an article in <a href="https://www.natureindex.com/">Nature Index</a> discussing inequity in open access publishing (<a href="https://www.natureindex.com/news-blog/equity-concerns-persist-over-open-access-publishing">click here to read the article</a>). The article is concise and informative, including interviews and quotes from scholars (including AARC Director Anthony J. Olejniczak).</p>
<p>We’ve also noticed that the discussion about our article on social media has largely been about only one of the two major findings our article presented: publication of open access articles with article processing charges (APCs) “appears to be skewed toward scholars with greater access to resources and job security.” We also think this an important finding, but we urge readers to interpret the result in the context of our other major finding: that publication of <em><strong>any</strong> </em>open access article (regardless of APCs) follows the same pattern, albeit to a slightly lesser degree if APCs are not involved.</p>
<p>There is an important conversation happening in the academy and publishing industry about APCs (see, e.g., a <a href="https://zenodo.org/record/4558704#.YEpAbLCSkuU">recent report on Diamond Open Access</a>) &#8211; whether APCs should exist, and if so who should pay for them. We at AARC strongly support moving to a model that makes publishing and reading free for authors and readers, respectively. But we also feel it is only one piece (a big piece, certainly, but only one) of the inequity puzzle in open access publishing. Even when green and bronze open access articles are included in our regression model, inequities persist. Here’s figure 4 from our article, showing the exponentiated coefficients from our regression model predicting the number of open access articles authored including all (not just APC) open access authorships:</p>

<p>Clearly APCs act as a barrier to some, further entrenching extant inequity in the academic publishing sphere, but it should not be lost in the discussion that <em><strong>all</strong></em> forms of OA exhibit a similar pattern. Clearly there is work to be done not only in terms of the cost and economic model, but also towards the more equitable adoption of OA of all types.</p>


Open access inequity is not only about article processing charges (APCs)

Preprints allow researchers to stake a claim to their ideas and results by establishing a clear and timestamped record of their work, even if <a href="https://www.theeditorialhub.com/blog/authors-editors-peer-review/why-peer-review-taking-so-long">the peer review process drags on for months</a>. Preprints also facilitate rapid communication among scholars, which can be critical during times of crisis; the COVID-19 pandemic, for instance, <a href="https://www.fastcompany.com/90537072/how-the-covid-19-crisis-has-prompted-a-revolution-in-scientific-publishing">led to a surge in preprint publications across several fields of study</a>.</p>
<p>The rise of preprints leads to many new research questions, including that asked by <a href="https://www.mdpi.com/2304-6775/9/1/5">Pagliaro (2021)</a> in a recently published paper in the journal <a href="https://www.mdpi.com/journal/publications"><em>Publications</em></a>: do manuscripts change substantially between preprint posting and the final, peer-reviewed version of the article? Following in the footsteps of scholars who studied this question in Physics and Biological Sciences, Pagliaro studied a small sample of Chemistry articles, finding &#8220;the differences between preprints and the corresponding articles published after peer review are small.&#8221;</p>
<p>The implications of only &#8220;small&#8221; changes to preprints as they wind their way through the editorial and peer review process raises questions about the institution of peer review (also discussed by Pagliaro). There are also important implications for bibliometric and scientometric data aggregators (including <a href="http://www.academicanalytics.com">Academic Analytics</a>), however, who typically include &#8220;peer-reviewed&#8221; as a criterion for including a scholarly research artifact in their databases (effectively precluding preprints from having a role in the research strategy and planning exercises that are carried out based on these databases).</p>
<p>On one hand, including preprints in bibliometric databases necessitates substantial additional investment in disambiguation and data merging. The preprint (which often has its own DOI) eventually needs to be linked to the final published version of the paper so the same research output is not recorded as two artifacts of research (or at least so the end user can identify that the same manuscript resulted in two artifacts) rather than &#8220;double-counting&#8221; the manuscript. There are also cases where preprints never result in a peer-reviewed journal article; in these cases, counting preprints among the number of publications for an institution/department/scholar may incentivize the production of preprints for which the author has no intention of ultimately putting the ideas or results through peer-review.</p>
<p>On the other hand, excluding preprints from bibliometric databases signals that preprints are not valuable enough to be considered among the other artifacts produced by scholars (&#8220;value&#8221; here meaning <a href="https://quod.lib.umich.edu/j/jep/3336451.0010.107?view=text;rgn=main">the purported value conferred through the peer review process</a>). Clearly this is not a fair characterization of preprints, which have tremendous value. With the efficacy of <a href="https://science.sciencemag.org/content/342/6154/60/">peer</a> <a href="https://asistdl.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/abs/10.1002/asi.22784">review</a> <a href="https://www.mayoclinicproceedings.org/article/S0025-6196(18)30707-9/fulltext">increasingly</a> <a href="https://academic.oup.com/brain/article/123/9/1964/282957">called</a> <a href="https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/25675064/">into</a> <a href="https://news.northwestern.edu/stories/2015/05/opinion-chronicle-odom-bias-peer-review">question</a>, it may be time for bibliometric database providers to mobilize resources to solve the problems of &#8220;double-counting&#8221; and what to do with preprints that never make their way into traditional journals.</p>
<p>We are eager to hear your thoughts on preprints and whether (and how) bibliometric databases can include them to more fully represent the research outputs of scholars.</p>

The preprint conundrum for bibliometric databases

<p>AARC scholars work with many datasets describing the publication outputs of research faculty. These datasets are almost always zero-inflated, or at least are skewed toward the lower end of the distribution. This phenomenon is so common we’ve even changed how we perform regression analyses to account for these skewed distributions (e.g., we ran hurdle regressions in <a href="https://www.mitpressjournals.org/doi/full/10.1162/qss_a_00091">our paper on Open Access publication trends</a>). The histogram below shows the average number of journal articles published by scholars in departments classified as “Physics” over the past 10 years:</p>

<p>The data are clearly skewed towards the left side of the plot, between 0-100 articles per person over 10 years. The mean number of articles published over 10 years is 91.7 (green vertical line) and the median number of articles is 32 (red vertical line); however, a few physicists have as many as 1,100 articles over that 10-year span. These scholars are generally associated with massive multi-institution and multi-year projects such as CERN, so we looked at several other disciplines outside the natural sciences to see whether the pattern persists – the image below is for English Language and Literature journal articles over the same 10-year period:</p>

<p>Indeed, the distribution looks similar to that seen for physicists. In English, the mean number of journal articles per person over 10 years (green vertical line) is 3.8, while the median is 2.0 articles (red vertical line). A small number of English faculty members have published upwards of 50 journal articles over the 10-year period.</p>
<p>The skewness of these publication metrics complicates interpretation of discipline norms, with meaningful consequences for the faculty, administrators, and other committee members charged with comparing discipline publishing patterns for strategic planning. In English, the median number of journal articles published is about one half of the mean value, and in Physics the median is about one third of the mean value. Although means are commonly used in bibliometric comparisons, choosing the mean as the unit of comparison biases the data towards the few examples at the extreme right end of the publishing distribution.</p>
<p>For these reasons, we believe the median is often the more appropriate measure for intra- and interdisciplinary analysis and bibliometric comparisons. University-wide planning and evaluation are better served by focusing on discipline (or peer group) norms such as the median, rather than numbers incorporating the most extreme cases and perhaps setting unrealistic publishing expectations.</p>

Should interdisciplinary comparisons of journal article publications use the mean or median?

As we looked at the number of Ph.D. graduates and the number of programs over time, we realized that growth in those areas probably means growth in another metric- the number of faculty members mentoring those students and teaching in those programs. The table below shows the number of Ph.D. program faculty by broad field as of 2019 (Academic Analytics database version AAD2019-1470):</p>

<p>Several disciplines from outside the life sciences make the “top 10” most populous list. What’s unclear is how recent the above table came to look this way – Neuroscience is the largest (by faculty population) Ph.D. discipline in the US, but was that the case 5 years ago? 10 years ago? It will be informative to uncover the history of growth over time in each field, and to attempt to trace that growth to the underlying causes.</p>

What are the biggest fields in Ph.D. education?

As we explored the publication patterns of early career, middle career, and senior scholars, a basic question emerged that we didn’t include in our original study: are some academic fields home to “older” faculty than others, on average?</p>
<p>The table below shows the 10 “oldest” fields in the Academic Analytics database (version AAD2019-1470); we infer age from the year each scholar earned their Ph.D. (or other terminal degree, MFA, MBA, etc.) for all ranked professors in each of 171 fields:</p>

<p>Surprisingly, all 10 of the oldest fields are in the relatively fast-paced biological/biomedical sciences. We expected academic age to correspond to the pace of publication, but we failed to account for an important component of the career trajectory of many life scientists – the postdoctoral phase.</p>
<p>In light of the data above, we now hypothesize that life scientists aren’t actually older than their peers in other fields, just that the youngest scholars aren’t part of the sample – they are doing postdocs (see, e.g., <a href="https://www.nature.com/news/the-future-of-the-postdoc-1.17253">this Nature news article from 2015</a>).</p>

<p>As is always the case, interpreting data across disciplines requires nuance. Faculty members, university administrators, and other committee members charged with interdisciplinary comparisons must always be cautious – the data themselves often conceal important field-level differences that aren’t obvious at first glance.</p>

Are some academic fields &#8220;older&#8221; than others?

Brainard&#8217;s story describes Plan S (a mainly European initiative mandating free and immediate access to articles published by authors supported by public grants) and provides a primer on the state of Open Access publishing, how it benefits authors, and some of the criticisms of the OA financial model. Academic Analytics and the Academic Analytics Research Center (AARC) strongly support Open Access publishing, and we are delighted that a recently published article by AARC researchers Anthony J. Olejniczak and Molly J. Wilson was discussed in the news article (our article can be downloaded from the publisher&#8217;s site: <a href="https://www.mitpressjournals.org/doi/full/10.1162/qss_a_00091">https://www.mitpressjournals.org/doi/full/10.1162/qss_a_00091</a>). Open Access publishing is a major step forward for the publishing industry, but an author&#8217;s ability to afford article processing charges should not determine whether that author&#8217;s work is freely and immediately available to their colleagues and the public.</p>

<p>AARC Director Anthony J. Olejniczak, Ph.D. and AARC Researchers Molly J. Wilson, Ph.D. studied the characteristics of  authors who choose to publish their work in OA venues. Their article, titled <a href="https://www.mitpressjournals.org/doi/abs/10.1162/qss_a_00091"><i>Who’s writing Open Access (OA) articles? Characteristics of OA authors at Ph.D. granting institutions in the USA</i></a>, demonstrates that the democratization of the research literature through increased adoption of the OA publishing model may be skewed towards only a subset of scholars. Their findings are summarized in the article&#8217;s abstract:</p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><em>The open access (OA) publication movement aims to present research literature to the public at no cost and with no restrictions. While the democratization of access to scholarly literature is a primary focus of the movement, it remains unclear whether OA has uniformly democratized the corpus of freely available research, or whether authors who choose to publish in OA venues represent a particular subset of scholars &#8211; those with access to resources enabling them to afford article processing charges (APCs). We investigated the number of OA articles with article processing charges (APC OA) authored by 182,320 scholars with known demographic and institutional characteristics at American research universities across 11 broad fields of study. Results show, in general, that the likelihood for a scholar to author an APC OA article increases with male gender, employment at a prestigious institution (AAU member universities), association with a STEM discipline, greater federal research funding, and more advanced career stage (i.e., higher professorial rank). Participation in APC OA publishing appears to be skewed toward scholars with greater access to resources and job security.</em></p>

<p>We expect that all forms of scholarship and recognition &#8211; from research grants and journal articles to books, honorific awards, and citations &#8211; will be impacted in some way by the COVID-19 pandemic in the coming years. While many forms of research take months or even years to become available, preprints are one way to disseminate knowledge rapidly and without restriction. This level of access and timeliness make preprints ideal as a way to explore “real-time” scholarship on an emerging topic. Hopefully, the global mobilization of scholars to study all aspects of the novel coronavirus and present their results will hasten the end of this pandemic through knowledge production and sharing.</p>
<p>We’ve been monitoring preprint publication patterns through the course of the pandemic, keeping track of those studies whose title or abstract mention terms directly related to the current global health crisis (e.g., “coronavirus”, “COVID-19,” “SARS-CoV-2”, etc.). The medRxiv repository has seen a substantial increase in the number of preprints posted in the last 5 months, from around 200 preprints per month pre-pandemic (November, 2019), to more than 900 preprints in March, 2020. Interestingly, the uptick in preprints posted to medRxiv is due almost entirely to research about the novel coronavirus (in orange), although a slightly higher number of preprints on non-coronavirus related topics have also been posted in the last two months (in blue). In February, 43.7% of the preprints on medRxiv were related to the COVID-19 pandemic. In March, that number rose to 69.3%.</p>

<p>Other preprint servers that are not clinical-focused are seeing only a modest number of studies posted about COVID-19. In February, 2.0% of the preprints on bioRxiv were about coronavirus, in March this rose to 4.1%.</p>

<p>The arXiv repository describes itself as serving “physics, mathematics, computer science, quantitative biology, quantitative finance, statistics, electrical engineering and systems science, and economics.” Nonetheless, 1.4% of the preprints posted to arXiv in March were about the COVID-19 pandemic.</p>

<p>We will follow this trend in the coming weeks to explore how COVID-19 alters the research and publishing landscape, and we hope to include the results of research from other fields &#8211; particularly preprints from the social sciences, arts, and humanities. In the months and years ahead, we will look to identify patterns and changes, and adapt our database in light of the “new normal” brought about by this global pandemic. In the meantime, we are encouraged to see so many scholars sharing their work rapidly and without access restrictions or paywalls.</p>

<p>Academic Analytics Research Center (AARC) scholars Anthony J. Olejniczak, Ph.D. and Molly J. Wilson, Ph.D. recently posted a preprint of their research on <a href="https://osf.io/preprints/socarxiv/gcr32">SocArXiv</a>. The manuscript, <em>Who’s writing Open Access (OA) articles? Characteristics of OA authors at Ph.D. granting institutions in the USA</em>, explores the authorship side of Open Access publishing. Here&#8217;s the abstract of their study:</p>
<p><em>The adoption of open access (OA) publishing has grown rapidly in the last two decades; an increasing share of the research literature is available to the public at no cost and with no restrictions. Despite the enormous growth of OA publishing, few studies have explored the characteristics of the authors who choose to publish their research as OA articles. Understanding who produces the increasing number of OA articles is crucial for publishers and the research community seeking to democratize the results of knowledge production. We investigated the number of OA articles authored by 182,320 scholars with known demographic and institutional characteristics at American research universities across 11 broad fields of study. Results show that male scholars at more prestigious institutions (e.g., AAU members) and scholars with greater job security (e.g., higher professorial rank) are likely to publish more OA articles. Securing federal research grants is also a significant predictor of OA publishing activity. Although OA is growing in terms of the quantity of articles published, participation in OA publishing appears to be skewed towards scholars in STEM fields with greater access to resources and greater job security.</em></p>

<p>Academic Analytics Research Center (AARC) scholars William E. Savage, Ph.D. and Anthony J. Olejniczak, Ph.D. recently posted a preprint of their research on <a href="https://osf.io/preprints/socarxiv/vznty/">SocArXiv</a>. The preprint, <em>Research publication productivity among senior faculty at Ph.D.-granting institutions in the United States</em>, documents the publishing patterns of early career, mid-career, and senior scholars in terms of books, book chapters, journal articles, and conference proceedings. Results show that rather than the commonly cited &#8220;peak-and-decline&#8221; model of career publishing patterns, senior scholars shift their focus away from journal articles and conference proceedings and focus on publishing books and chapters. <p>Academic Analytics is pleased to announce the formation of the <strong>Academic Analytics Research Center (AARC)</strong>. AARC is tasked with finding ways the Academic Analytics database can be applied to uncover and disseminate new data and findings on issues of concern to higher education and scholarly research. In addition to publishing original research, AARC also places the Academic Analytics database into the hands of other qualified researchers. From gender disparities in publishing and citations to the lifetime trajectory of faculty research activity in different fields of study, the Academic Analytics database is a rich resource for scholars seeking comprehensive information on research in higher education.</p>
<p>AARC will act as the sole point of contact for any researcher wishing to access the Academic Analytics database and will receive and review all research proposals involving Academic Analytics data. The Academic Analytics Research Center hereby announces a Request for Proposals for a scholarly research project using academic analytics data. The objective of this Request for Proposal is to locate scholars who will provide significant and publishable research projects using the Academic Analytics database, and to support those scholars with data at no cost. <p><strong>&#8220;In Finance Field, Gender Disparities Are Significant—But Shrinking&#8221;</strong></p>
<p>Professor of Finance Heather E. Tookes of Yale University recently wrote about her research into the gender gap in the finance discipline, <a href="https://insights.som.yale.edu/insights/in-finance-field-gender-disparities-are-significant-but-shrinking">read the story here</a>. Her project incorporated Academic Analytics data from the new Academic Analytics Research Center (AARC).</p>

The next two frequent collaborative disciplines are Chemistry and Electrical Engineering which account for 2.1% and 1.6% of all co-authored Physics journal publications respectively. Do you know who are the top potential collaborators in Physics that best complement your research and where they are located?</p>
<p>According to the data captured in the Academic Analytics database, 52.5% of all Physics faculty captured by Academic Analytics have received an honorific award. The American Physical Society provides 20.2% of those awards. Of the faculty population for whom we have been able to identify gender, the recipients of awards presented by the American Physical Society recorded in the Academic Analytics database were 88.4% male and 11.6% female.</p>

<p><span style="color: #000120;">According to the data captured in the Academic Analytics database, 39.3% of Psychology faculty have received a national honorific award. The American Psychological Association provides the most honorific awards for the discipline, accounting for 35.8% of all awards. Of the faculty population for whom we have been able to identify gender, the distribution of awards granted by the American Psychological Association is 61.8% of awards going to male scholars and 38.2% going to female scholars.</span></p>

The broad field most like Chemistry is Engineering and its sub-fields, publishing collaborative research 97.6% of the time. <p><span style="color: #000120;">46.7% of all Chemistry faculty captured by Academic Analytics have received an honorific award. The American Chemical Society presents the most honorific awards for the discipline, accounting for 18.5% of all awards. Of the faculty population for whom we have been able to identify gender, 56.3% of those awards went to male scholars and 43.7% went to female scholars. The next major providers of awards for the discipline are the American Association for the Advancement of Science and the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation.</span></p>

Institutional Investor covers reseachers using Academic Analytics

<p>A new preprint <a href="https://ssrn.com/abstract=3438653">available on SSRN</a> examines female representation in the academic finance profession. Authors Mila Getmansky Sherman (Isenberg School of Management at the University of Massachusetts Amherst) and Heather Tookes (professor of finance at the Yale School of Management) relied on Academic Analytics data in their study. Among their findings are that women are less likely to be tenured, and women are paid less than men. Moreover, they report that women publish fewer papers than men, and that women have more female coauthors.
